"Gogol's Last Days"

For this short surreal-horror animation, I decided to replicate the look and feel of a Kinetoscope film from the 1890's. This is loosely based on the downward spiral that hit famous novelist Nikolai Gogol, who was led to burning the manuscript for one of his unreleased works after he was convinced that his writing was "unholy".

Animation for each individual character was done in Adobe Photoshop. Everything was then compiled in After Effects, with stock film overlays from YouTube superimposed on top of the animation.

Style was also influenced by the works of famous Russian animators Aleksandr Petrov and Yuriy Norshteyn.
